The autumn is upon us even though here in the Bay Area, temperatures are still high. But soon enough, mother nature will send us fresh, crisp air and hopefully rain. And I cannot wait for cooler days so I can pull out all of my sweaters, coats, and boots - I much prefer cold to heat.
Cooler weather means layers, sweaters, coats, and blazers. It means infinite possibilities to mix and match colors, textures, and ideas.
Sweaters are amazingly versatile when it comes to styling and wearing them. They are easy pieces to layer or wear on their own. There are infinite possibilities of proportions, textures, and patterns. So you are thinking of getting a new sweater this season, I say pick one that has some drama either in color, volume, or design.
But, there is always a "but." There are few rules to remember when styling a sweater.
One way to spice up a look is to play with proportions, whether puffy sleeves or oversize boyfriend cardigan. Keep in mind that since a sweater offers volume at the top, you need to keep it slim at the bottom. That means pair your oversized knit with skinny or straight jeans, classic cut pants, short or mid-length skirts, or slip dresses.
One of the clean-cut looks is to tuck in a sweater in the front, creating an hourglass silhouette with a clearly defined waistline. Here we could tuck in a classic sweater into a skirt, jeans, or shorts.
Dress it up
A sweater dress is a cozy option to keep you warm and stylish. I would throw on a pair of stockings or leggings for additional dimension. A sweater can be paired with pumps, sneakers, or boots - no wrong answers here. You can also play with adding a belt, long necklace, or scarf.
Another great option is to layer a knit over a slip dress. I love this option. First, you are making use of a summer wardrobe. And second, the look offers an exciting contrast of materials, colors, and textures.
Cut it out
If you are thinking about adding a new sweater to your collection. Consider sweaters with cut out details or cropped designs. These can be fun to wear and can be easily layered over a tank top during colder days.
And of course, no matter a sweater, it can always be dressed up or down. White sneakers, leather boots, or stylish loafers can be paired with any sweater making it the perfect combo to run errands. High heel boots or pumps can add flair to a girls' night-out-look or a coffee-date outfit.
