It is August, and that means we are getting closer to autumn. And yes, for me, the fall is far away as the Bay Area often gets scorchingly hot in September and starts to cool off only in the middle of October. But that does not mean that I cannot begin planning my transitional wardrobe.
The cool autumn days will be here before we know it. The fall breeze will swoop in, causing shivers to go down my spine. And that is the time when I will regret not having light layers with me. So let's not be caught off guard and start planing our affordable transitional wardrobe.
What Is A Transitional Wardrobe?
A transitional wardrobe is a collection of items that pair well with the current season's essentials to offer additional warmth, dimension, and versatility. These pieces are also effective layering heroes that can be easily peeled off during a warm afternoon and added back on once the sun sets.
Essential Characteristics Of A Transitional Wardrobe
Use what you have; there is no need to buy a whole new wardrobe (we are trying to maintain an affordable wardrobe)
Do not be afraid to layer summer items (having versatile items is the key)
Experiment with colors and textures (exciting outfits must be brave)
Invest in fantastic wardrobe staples (in the long run, you will save money)
My Transitional Wardrobe Pieces
Now that we know what transitional items are, we can dive right into my selection.
But before we do, I want to point out that transitional pieces can be worn throughout the year. There is no need to buy items that can be styled only between seasons. The overall goal is to build a versatile and affordable wardrobe that works for any occasion or season.
1. A Classic Blazer
I will sound like a broken record, but an awesome blazer is the perfect transitional piece. It is stylish, practical, and versatile. It is super easy to throw on a blazer in the morning, even if you know it will be hotter in the afternoon. Just be ready to peel off layers as the day warms up. Then in the evening, when the air cools, you throw it back on. You are warm, stylish, and ready for anything!
2. A Button-Down Shirt
A button-down shirt is a classic that should already be in your wardrobe. I have three shirts from Everlane that I love. The beauty is that I can wear them on their own or add them as a layering piece.
On its own, a shirt can be paired with almost anything from jeans to a dress skirt.
When used as a layering item, it can be worn with a t-shirt, camisole, fitted dress, or cropped top.
A dress shirt is the perfect fall item as well. Later, when the weather gets colder, you can always pair the shirt with a sweater, cardigan, or blazer. The button-down is a true wardrobe classic.
3. A Perfect Pair Of Pumps
It is critical to have one versatile pair of heels in either black, navy, or camel color. The pumps pair well with jeans for an uplifting casual look or with office attire for a polished look.
The closed-toe shoes - pumps - are perfect for cooler evenings. While your feet still get a slight breeze, your toes are not freezing off.
When you think about the perfect pumps, think about
The wider the heel, the better
The wider the toe box, the better
The lower the heel, the better
The classic colors like black, navy, nude, camel are the most versatile
If you are investing in one perfect pair, buy timeless styles like round- or pointy-toe pumps with a classic clean design.
4. A Versatile Cardigan
A lovely cardigan is another perfect transitional piece that will become your go-to for so many looks. Cardigans work well with most tops and bottoms. Also, it is easy to dress them up or down. I do believe that sky is the limit when it comes to styling cardigans.
If you are a fan of oversized cardigans, pair them with fitted tops, dresses, jeans, and skirts. You can also add a belt for additional definition.
If you are a fan of a fitted cardigan, you can play with proportions by wearing a voluminous skirt or boyfriend jeans.
5. A Classic Turtleneck Or Long Sleeve Top
I vote for a turtleneck, but any long sleeve top will do here. A longer sleeve offers a little bit more comfort, warmth, and coziness. If I wear a long sleeve with a blazer, I can always take off the blazer and still feel comfortable in a fresh autumn breeze.
I hope you enjoyed my post and maybe found a little bit of inspiration. Please do not feel like you have to run to the store to get missing pieces. (Unless you want to invest in a great wardrobe staple.) I am sure that your closet has what you need to create your perfect transitional looks.
Please let me know what you think or if you tried any of my suggestions.
